Died Friday, January 7, 2011

FOUNTAIN, Colo. — Jerry Bernard France, 57, of Fountain, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2011.

He was born Sept. 30, 1953, in Martinsville, Va., to Sallie and Otis France. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Bradley.

He served in the Army and did two combat tours during his military career, including the Persian Gulf from 1990 to 1991, for which he received the Bronze Star for Valor, and Operation Restore Hope in Somalia in 1993.

France also participated in President Carter’s inauguration ceremony.

After retiring from the military in 2001, he worked as a custodian for School District 8, where he worked at Jordahl Elementary School.

He graduated from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in geography and environmental studies. Afterward, he became head custodian at Eagle Side in July 2007.

He was a member of the male chorus and men’s fellowship at Prussman Chapel.

Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Debra A. Bradley France; three sons, Jerry France Jr., Donnell Bradley and Lydell Bradley, all of Fountain; two daughters, Shewada and Victoria Bradley of Martinsville; three other children, Michelle Turner and Pamela Turner, both of Martinsville, and Paige Turner Jr. of Greensboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren; four brothers, Otis France of Oxon Hill, Md., Joseph France of Chester, Va., John France of Martinsville and Larry France of Stopbridge, Ga.; five sisters, Dorothy France-Davis of Baltimore, Md., Gloria Johnson and Shirley Wooten, both of Martinsville, Juanita Martin of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Brenda France of Tacoma, Wash.; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The funeral was held Jan. 15 at Prussman Chapel at Fort Carson with Pastor Theodore Johnson officiating.

Military honors were by the Fort Carson Honor Guard.

Pallbearers were members of the Male Chorus at Prussman Chapel.
