Died Wednesday, November 14, 2007


George Edward May, 62, of Salem, died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007.

He was born in Martinsville on Aug. 1, 1945, to Scotty and Dollie Rice May. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Linda Olivia Skaggs May; a daughter, Lauren Fleming May; his twin sister, Barbara May Riddle; and a brother, Charles May.

He graduated from Martinsville High School; received an Associate of Arts degree in biology from Ferrum College in 1965 and a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Richmond in 1967. He received his Master of Education degree from Radford University and continued his education at the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University.

May taught for more than 40 years at schools including Martinsville High School from 1967 to 1976; James River High School from 1977 to 1983; and Salem High School since 1963, in which he was a geometry and trigonometry pre-International Baccalaureate teacher, and geometry teacher at Salem High School since 1983.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Salem; served on the Roanoke City School Board from 1978-1984; was an assistant pro at Chatmoss County Club, was involved with Martinsville Jaycees and served on the Virginia State Board of Jaycees. He had served as chairman of the Roanoke Valley Golf Association for 30 years and had organized several golf tournaments.

Surviving are his daughter, Mary Kathryn May; an aunt; and a niece.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with Father R. Bradley Laycock Jr. and the Rev. Dr. Robert Copenhaver officiating. Inurnment will be at St. Paul’s Columbarium.

The family will receive friends at the church after the service Saturday.

Memorials may be made to the Roanoke Valley Golf Association, c/o Miller Baber, 3358 Morning Dove, Roanoke, Va. 24018, or the Salem Rescue Squad.

Arrangements are by John M. Oakey and Son Funeral Home in Salem.
