Throughout the MaVaHi site, I have left many
messages. I would like to explain why I am
so willing to "speak up". Many years ago, I
regarded my years in Martinsville and Henry
County as the happiest days of my life. I
went swimming almost daily at Liberty
Heights. Played a lot of baseball on both
Brown St field and the old North Martins-
ville playground. Many things have changed
in that area - too many. There was a time
when I felt at home in Martinsville. Bas-
sett, Fieldale and Kohler. However, a re-
cent trip through all of these areas made
me very sad. "Progress" - if that is what
they wish to call it - may have wrecked
the baseball fields I once played on - and
took away Liberty Heights swimming pool -
but, I still have my memories and nothing
can take that from me short of death .... or
advanced alzheimer's disease. No .... I am
not necessarily seeking attention. But, I
am trying to reclaim some of the happiness I
found in life during my earlier years in
Martinsville/Henry County. Of course, it
will still only be a "memory" - but, that is
better than nothing. |
