Old Jr. High School Building and Memories. - 55
01/25/03     C. Bruce Lupton  (1962)      Loopydade@msn.com
My goodness, I just happened to notice the photo at the top of this page after submitting my entry below this one. If I am not mistaken, that is the old Junior High School on Cleveland Avenue, before the old high school was turned into the junior high school. This old building was demolished and made way for some of the Mulberry Road extentions. At first I thought it was the larger school, but if you notice there are only one section of windows to the left and right of the center section. That makes it the old Junior High. By the way, Coach Mel Cartwright was the principal there when I attended in 1955-57. I had Miss Via and Mrs. Holland as teachers there. I remember it well. Directly behind this school was the old gym, which I believe, may still be standing. This will give you younger folks a reference point as to where this was. Directly across Cleveland Avenue from this building was the old Central Grammar School which was closed before my time and was also destroyed for later construction. We used to park our cars in the old Grammar School parking lot and head to Snow's Sandwich shop for lunch or just walk to Floyd's which was two doors down from the Jr. Hi. The School Board Office was a small white framed house sitting in between Floyd's and the Jr. Hi.
Enough history lessons for now. Enjoy.
