Kathryn Ascough Smith, 71, of Martinsville, died peacefully March 29, 2014. She was born in Roanoke, VA on Dec. 18, 1942.

She was a graduate of Martinsville High School and Salem College in Winston-Salem, N.C.
She was the daughter of Purnell Schottland Ascough of Martinsville and the late William Woodson Ascough.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Nelson Franklin (“Franky”) Smith; her daughter, Julia Smith Klingman (Ross) of Charlotte, N.C., two sons, William Franklin Smith (Susan) of Martinsville and Harrison Hunter Smith of the home; and four grandchildren, Harrison Hunter Klingman, Margaret June Klingman, William Woodson Smith and Ann Mason Smith. She is also survived by her sister, Julia Ascough Work of Dallas, Texas, and was also preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Harold Knowlton Work.
Kay’s community involvement was extensive. She served on the State Board of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services, appointed by the former Governor Mark Warner of Virginia. She was past president of the Garden Study Club of the Garden Club of Virginia. She also served on the Special Education Advisory Board of Martinsville City Schools; the Board of Directors, Piedmont Arts Association; and the Board of Directors, Edwards Adult Day Care Center. She also served on the Board of Trustees, Piedmont Arts Association. She served on the Board of Directors, Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County; Adult Day Care Center, Martinsville; Carlisle School, Martinsville; and Piedmont Community Services. She was a member of Broad Street Christian Church. She served as co-chairman of the Shared Vision Campaign, Piedmont Arts Association. She was a sustaining member of the Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County and the Garden Study Club, Martinsville.
A private graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Oakwood Cemetery, followed by a celebration of her life at 12 p.m., at Broad Street Christian Church with the Reverend Dr. James Dickerson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Piedmont Community Services, 24 Clay Street, Martinsville, Va. 24112 or Piedmont Arts Association 215 Starling Ave, Martinsville, Va. 24112.
McKee-Stone Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
