For those of you who haven't heard a definite date for our next reunion, it is being planned for Friday, May 20, with a casual, catered picnic at the faithful old Firemen's Cabin. We plan to start meeting at 5:30 and eat about 6:30, but we will stay until they run us off the premises. BYOB and mixers for Friday night.
Saturday morning will consist of a uptown walk. Those of you who want to participate will have an opportunity to do a walk through uptown Martinsville, starting at 11 am, and it will be over at approximately 12:30 pm. We will meet in the Broad Street Parking Lot, which is across the street from the post office and the munipal building. We will walk as a group and discuss how things have changed and what used to be there. We will learn a little history behind a few buildings such as the old U.S. Post Office, which was built in 1939 with Doric columns and the Masonic Temple (Holt's), which ws built in 1914 in the Classical-Revival style. Did you know that in the 19th Century, Church, Main, and Fayette Streets were all primarily residential? In 1896, the Queen-Anne style H.C. Lester house occupied an entire block. The home had been used as a boarding house until it burned down in 1946, and all that remains is the 1915 carriage house.
Saturday night, we are meeting at the Lynwood Country Club at 5:30 pm. We will have an hour or so of socializing before sitting down to a buffet dinner of baked chicken, roast beef, mashed or boiled potatoes with parsley, corn pudding or whole kernel corn, green beans, broccoli medley with cheese sauce, tossed salad with dressings, dinner rolls, fresh coconut cake and apple cobbler for dessert. We will have tea, lemonade, and water as beverages. We will use glass dishes and silverware, which we will have to rent along with tablecloths and napkins.
We intend to wear casual attire at the Saturday evening meal, and we will leave the building at approximately 11:30 pm. We intend to have a live band for your entertainment. We will hire a bartender and provide mixers, but you will need to check in your own liquor with your name on it at the bar. When you want to order a drink, the bartender can bring out your bottle and mix your drink. We will also hire a "much better" videographer, who will be asking you to say something for the camera, so be thinking about that. You may want to simply introduce yourself and your spouse and tell us what you and your family have been up to for the past 40 years, or you may want to get with a group of your classmates to relate a funny story about you and your friends from high school days. We want everyone there to be in this DVD. The videographer is my son, Mat. He is used to filming reunions and will prompt you on what to say if you are speechless or camera shy. He will take orders for the DVDs on Saturday night, and the DVD will include both Friday and Saturday night activities. He charges $17 to mail you a copy of the DVD after the event. He will also take checks by mail during the next few weeks for those who were not at the reunion, but who want to see what everybody else did and how everyone else looks. We will play a little memory game on Saturday night to give you a chance to win a prize. So pull out an old yearbook, and brush up on your high school trivia!
We hope that you will be able to attend all of these events. It is a wonderful thing to see high school friends 40 years later. Mark you calendars for the weekend of May 20 – 21. More details about prices will follow later. Sounds good, doesn't it?
