Our nation is presently honoring those who lost their life during the D-Day invasion in 1944. Most of us were not quite born yet. Our war was Vietnam. As far as I know, the only person of our class that we can and do honor, who died in battle in that war, was SP4 Lonnie Douglas Alley. Doug did not make it to graduate with us, but he was our classmate at Joseph Martin for seven years and part of our high school years. He was a really-really nice guy. I lost contact with Doug in high school and don’t know the reason he did not graduate. I do not even know when he enlisted in the Army.
I do know that many of us that went to Joseph Martin and Clearview Elementary were in families that struggled with finances. Many moms were homemakers and most of our dads made low pay as furniture factory workers, so it was necessary for many of us to go to work early. In my case, I ran the cafeteria cash register for a free lunch in my 8th and 9th grades, and then always had some job from age 15 including full time at Sale Knitting second shift my senior year. I knew many classmates that had it much tougher than me. Some graduated, some did not.
Thinking about Doug today, I was remembering our childhood which had so many wonderful memories and friendships. I would like to suggest to the classes of 1964 and later, when you have your 50 year reunions, please consider inviting your classmates that did not quite make it to graduation. Is it really necessary that they completed the race with you? Remember, they were your classmates and friends for probably 10 of your 12 years. Maybe they were unfortunate and had life’s tribulations at an early age: divorced or sick parents, moved, parent lost job, had to work, got married, had a child, joined the military, etc. Were we not the fortunate ones? I am hoping you will consider inviting your classmates that could not make the complete trip with you.

Very well said Leon, thank you.
I remember the name but cannot attach a face. If you can post a picture of Doug, I would really appreciate it. His sacrifice should not go unnoticed. |

Re: Doug Alley died in Vietnam |
Thanks Bob,
It turns out that class of 64 claims him too. He was born March 1945 and started with us, but apparently ended in their class. I got an email from ken Wilson and they plan to try and get Doug and one more from their class, that died in Vietnam, honorary degrees to be presented at their reunion. I think that is wonderful! |

Re: Doug Alley died in Vietnam |
Hey Leon, did you get any feed back from the class behind us as far as an Honorary Diploma for Doug Alley? Really hope they followed through.
Do you know the name of the other Vietnam mortality from MHS class of '64?
Thanks |

Re: Doug Alley died in Vietnam |
Hi Bobby, I did not get to go to the Old Dawgs reunion Saturday, but Jimmy Campbell and Wayne Branscom both said they will call and fill me in. Jimmy talked to Doug while they were in Vietnam along with Shag LaPrade. He said Doug was killed in battle during the Tet Offensive that began 1-1-1968. Ken Wilson of 1964 was the one working on the diploma presentation. He has several posts on their message board so you can get his email address or I can let you know when I talk to Jimmy next week. I hope you are well and looking forward to that 70th birthday (ha-ha). leon |

Lewis Allen Jefferson class of 1964 died in Vietnam, 1966. He was a member of an Army recon platoon, very dangerous combat assignmnt. His picture and combat record can be found on the Internet...Vietnam War Memorial. |

I have Doug's Honorary Diploma from the Virginia Department of Edcation, but I cannot get in touch with any of his family members to present it to them. If any of you can help me with a phone number or an address, I would apprecialte it. |
