What Mim-Mo-Rees (as they sing it in country music). Rick, you were the radio hero of Martinsville teens back then. You were the only source for our "rock and roll," other than tuning into those night-time stations up north amidst flashes of static. As we all recall, rock and roll was a relatively new phenomena back then and without you, all we could get over local stations was country, bluegrass or big band sounds. We had nothing against that, but the rock and roll got in our veins. (I was the first drummer for local rock group out of Drewry Mason called "Gene & The Teen Beats" that went on to fame on the East Coast. My graduation class was MHS 1963, but I had roots (4 years) at good old Drewry Mason. Met my wife, then Myra Thrasher (65') at MHS. You played the songs that touched our young heartstrings and helped cement our relationship for 52 years (married) and still going strong, thanks to the Good Lord. You were years ahead of many disc jockeys in your style and we were lucky to have you and your talents in little old Martinsville's radio-land, as the old time preachers used to call it. We never have forgotten your contribution to our young lives. Long live radio, rock and roll, and Rick Shultz's "Sunday Session." Blessings to you Rick. |
