| One of the best basketball players of all time at MHS, Mickey Haynes passed away last Friday, Feb. 25th. He had been battling cancer for a year before his death. Not only was Mickey an outstanding athlete, but he was extremely smart. He published a physics and chemistry textbook several years ago. He will be sadly missed by the entire MHS family. |

| Mickey hit the shot to win the 1961 state championship at Virginia Tech's War Memorial Gym. I still remember Pete Bluhm's broadcast of the game on WMVA. |
