Tommy Hall and I made a visit to Ben Ramsey field on Friday evening, October 14th. The time was 6:45 pm. It was game day...We made ourselves comfortable in our camp chairs, staring through the chain link fence where the old Recreation Center use to be, on the 30 yard line, scoreboard end of the field. As we drank our coffee and tapped our canes on the fence, we replayed all of the games we could remember, and could almost hear the band playing the fight song... Essary made a key block as Smith, Roden, Uram, or Oakes just scored on 88 Quick Pitch. Johnny Reed flattened a defensive tackel, enabling Billy Cotty to make a divinv catch on the Bassett 20 yard line while Mjke Robertson put a chop block on the inside linebacker. Halftime!
With great fanfare, Andy Geoghagen led the band onto the field with another perceision halftime performance, it was wonderful. In the second half, jimmy Sampson caught another Wade pass in the corner on the end zone, but Whitener drew a penalty for illegal receiver downfield. As Wilson looked on from the bench, Hall made a spectacular downfield block for another Smith touchdown. Martinsville wins, 12 - 6. We folded up our chairs, made a final glace toward the field and I think we saw Coach Heldreth, Coach Painter, and and the cheerleaders walking off of the field arm-in-arm...Flora Rizlow and Ann Carter Browne turned and gave us wink. It was a good evening on Cleveland Avenue. |
