Maybe someone can help me out...I was wondering why the graduating classes are listed as 1933 and then it skips to 1942. I searched a little and found that the "old" high school on Cleveland Avenue was built in 1939. This explains the class of 1942 and beyond on Cleveland and the "new" school on Commonwealth. What I was wondering is the year that Martinsville High School was opened, where it was located (the one in 1933 and/or earlier)....basically a general history of the school before 1939. Thanks for any help, William "Cricket" Hankins, MHS Class of'92. |

First MHS graduating class at Commonwealth Blvd. was 1969. First graduating class in the building that is now the Junior High was 1940. Prior to 1940, the school was located in a building on Cleveland Ave next to the still-standing "old gym" - on the corner across Market St. from the old Pannill Knitting buildings.
The list of "graduating years" you refer to is actually a list of the PHOTOS that are on Mavahi.com. We have obtained copies of 1937-1941 yearbooks and these photos will be posted sometime over the holidays.
A History Page would be a nice addition to the site and will certainly be considered. |
