I am trying to create a list of our classmates who served in the military. I know of a few , but I dont't have a complete list. Those of you who did serve...please let me know. I'm planning a small presentation for our next reunion. |

Re: Military Service |
KEN, I WAS DRAFTED IN SEPT., '70 AFTER TEACHING ONE YEAR. WENT TO FORT JACKSON FOR ZERO WEEK AND BUSSED TO FORT DIX FOR BASIC TRAINING IN NEW JERSEY. WHEN ORDERS WERE GIVEN OUT AFTER BASIC, I RECEIVED DUTY ADMINISTERING APPITUDE TESTS TO INDUCTEES ON THE SEVENTEENTH FLOOR OF THE FEDERAL BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN PITSBURG, PENN. UNTIL MARCH OF 1972. AT THAT TIME THE WAR WAS NEAR IT'S END, AND THEY GAVE US A CHANCE TO GET OUT AFTER ONLY 18 MONTHS. THEY LET ME RENT AN APARTMENT IN THE CITY, LET ME WEAR CIVILIAN CLOTHES TO WORK AND CHANGE THERE. I MADE SEVERAL TRIPS TO GEORGIA TO SEE MY WIFE AND INFANT SON AND ALSO MAKE SEVERAL TO MARTINSVILLE FROM THERE TO VISIT MY MOTHER AND FATHER AND FAMILY. THANKS FOR ASKING. JERRY |

Re: Military Service |
Hi, Ken. I was in ROTC in college and commissioned a second lieutenant in the Army Medical Service Corps. I was stationed at a training field hospital at Ft. Belvoir for some months before going to Vietnam, where I was adjutant for the 71st Evacuation Hospital in Pleiku, in the central highlands. Received a Bronze Star and a promotion, but got out short of two years of service when my Nam tour was up in August 1970. By the way, perhaps the best read on Vietnam I've seen was " When we Were Soldiers...and Young.", which of course was the source of the recent Mel Gibson movie. There was a Lt. Geoghegan in there who died in one of the first helicopter assaults engaging NVA regulars, but he was no relation to me. What's your military story? |

Re: Military Service |
Thanks Andy! I enlisted in the US Navy on June 25, 1965. I was working with the city utility department prior to enlistment. I was shipped off to Great Lakes Naval Traing Center for 10 weeks of intensive swabby stuff
You know; starboard, port, poop deck, bell bottoms and how not to spit into the wind.
After basic I was assigned to the Boston Naval Yard where I reported aboard the USS Hyades, a Refrigerated store ship. We were the terror of the 6th. fleet. Nobody wanted to incur the wrath of our 3 inch guns. We were in drydock for about 8 months. At the time, Ann Carter and "the Fonz" were attending Emerson College and I didn't know it. We could have had a great time. After leaving Boston, went to radio school in Baimbridge Maryland to learn code and crytography.Went back to The Hyades, which was anchored in Norfolk. Went to Guantanamo
Bay Cuba for sea trials, drifted around the carribean, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, etc for awhile and returned to Norfolk and began our asssignment to the Mediterranean. It was a great experience. I left the navy as petty officer third class in 1967. I started college in 1968. I was never in combat...I was lucky. You and all of the others who served in Viet Nam have my deepest respect and admiration..............Ken Wilson |

Re: Military Service |
Ken I volunteered for the Air Force in Sept 1964. I spent a year in electronics tech school at Keesler AFB in Biloxi,Ms and then did a 3 yr tour of duty in England on a microwave radio site. There were 21 in my class 3 of us got a European tour and the balance went to Nam. I remember Bennie Grey being at Keesler as I was leaving. Bill Marlowe |
