The results of having a wonderful visit with our very own Pauline “Polly” Elkins Rosenstein recently were the realizations that many of us have misconceptions of our high school classmate’s opinions of themselves. Polly was surprised to learn I thought of her as being a very intelligent and fun loving person. While she knew she was “smart,” she did not think anyone else thought of her in that way. I was surprised to learn Polly thought I was “popular” and had many friends when, in fact, I did not think of myself in that way – just the opposite. I wanted to be more like Polly who was third among the “Twenty-one National Honor Society Seniors” of the MAVAHI Class of 1965.
While strolling through the 1965 MAVAHI Annual, I began missing my classmates and wondering what misconceptions they had of themselves and our misconceptions of one another. The classmates who have passed on will remain as we remember them. They will never know what we thought of them and we will never know what they thought of themselves. However, those of us who remain until the next class reunion have another chance at getting to know the truth and one another better.
If our paths do not cross before then, I look forward to seeing you at our Fiftieth Reunion. Regret I missed our Forty-fifth.
