George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and Sonny Wade….
What could these four possibly have in common? They’re all Virginians and on Postage stamps….Sonny Wade was recently honored by Canada for his 10 years with the Montreal Allouettes, on a Postage Stamp. He was awarded the coveted ‘Grey Cup’ three times, but is most known for the ‘Ice Bowl’, played on November 27, 1977, in frigid conditions. While a born and bred southern boy, he endured freezing temperatures and passed for 340 yards, and three touchdowns, to win the (CFL Super Bowl) Grey Cup Game over the Edmonton Eskimos 41-6. He candidly attributed his success to fellow team mate ‘Tony Proudfoot’ putting staples in his shoes. He said Edmonton spent the entire game ‘trying to chase him down’. Now I know where Grundy got the idea when they beat Salem a few years ago, and went on to the state championship game. After examination, they found ‘extra long cleats’ in their shoes….http://en.montrealalouettes.com/article/ac-and-sonny-wade-featured-on-canada-post-stamp

Congratulation Sonny!
I got to see Sonny play in college when he led his nationally ranked Emory & Henry team in a game at Maryville College. Despite my warnings that Sonny was the real deal, my classmates prepared signs and chants suggesting he was overrated. On the first possession, Sonny marched the Wasps downfield for a touchdown. Then on the extra point, the snap was fumbled and Sonny came out of the scramble with the ball facing away from the goal line. Without looking, he flipped the ball over his head toward the end zone, where the Emory receiver grabbed it for a two point conversion. It was an incredible play, the rout was on . . . and there were no more chants of “overrated” that night.
