I learned that Mel Cartwright Sr. died Feb. 8. Thinking of him brings back fond memories of Bulldog victories and a lot more. During many b-ball games at the Druid Hills gym, "Coach" spent time giving tips to this kid with sub-Bulldog talent. He was a versatile educator. One week he taught me that Mesopotamia, the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, was the cradle of civilization. The next week he taught me to drive a car with a manual transmission. He brought energy, enthusiasm and ideas to all that he did. I miss him! |

Re: Coach Cartwright |
Wes,
That is a glowing tribute to a great role model for us. I too was touched by coach Cartwright in many ways. I considered his house a second home. Coach continued to play basketball well into his fifties and play well. He also taugh me drivers training and the trick to use the reflection in the hardware store window to parallel park. Hope you are doing well.

Re: Coach Cartwright |
I remember the Coach because he talked on your level. but I also remember running into him at full speed while trying out for six-man football. It was the everybody-race to determine who was fastest and I was too busy trying to keep up with David jones and ran headlong into the Coach... I don't think he budged but picked me up and dusted me off with that grin of his... |

"Coach Cartwright." You don't say that name with disrespect. He wouldn't let you, and you wouldn't dare. Regardless of whether you agreed or disagreed with him on anything you respected his opinion. And, more importantly, he respected yours! It was that type of an attitude that helped him to help you to be what he saw in you that you could not see. I was priviledged to be in his World History class, and, since I already knew how to drive a manual shift, I spent my time during driver's ed, to my delight, chauffering The Coach and his children. |
