This entertaining book about the Bassett family, company and town is a NY Times bestseller. It was announced today that Tom Hanks will produce a HBO miniseries based on the book. Here is web address for the news article: http://www.roanoke.com/news/local/tom-hanks-will-produce-factory-man-miniseries-for-hbo/article_7d044ca2-ee63-5676-83ef-39e5570a39f6.html
The book is about the rise and fall of furniture and textile manufacturing in the area where we grew up with Bassett Furniture and John Bassett III as focal point. |

Wes, who knew 64 years ago when I was three years old and walking barefoot at my grandmother's house on Red Pole Hollow Drive at the foot of Trent Hill in Bassett, that area would someday be famous! Back then Red Pole was a narrow dirt road. A lot has been built and destroyed since then. 67 years sounds like a very short period of time. Living those years and looking back at their history, they seem ancient. Where did they go? Grandma used to tell me not to wish my life away; it would pass fast enough. Once again, Grandma was right! |
