As reported in the "Martinsville Bulletin" on 12NOV2017.
Walter E. Sheppard won the Outstanding Military Veteran Award by the Henry County Board of Supervisors and Martinsville City Council.
Walter E. Sheppard was drafted in the Marine Corps in 1966, one year after graduating from Martinsville High School.
Don't know if the Bulletin spelled his name wrong.

My hat is off to the Henry County Board of Supervisors and the Martinsville City Counsel for their excellent joint decision to select my friend and classmate, Walter Shepherd, as the Outstanding Military Veteran of the Year. The Martinsville and Henry County area is home to a great number of outstanding veterans and all are due the thanks and accolades of every citizen. Walter is certainly in the vanguard of veterans everywhere. His tireless contributions of work, time and dedication on behalf of veterans is extremely noticeable to all around him. He is admired by not only his devoted and lovely wife but by fellow veterans and all who know him.
Congratulations Walter…. You are and have always been truly an outstanding veteran.
