Miss Anthony died May 1 at age 91. We have lost one of the vivid figures of our Mavahi days. Few could enliven an assembly like Miss Anthony, roaring in with an arm-load of books. Throughout the auditorium, silent prayers were uttered, "Please God, don't let it be my locker that was raided!" With a dramatic flair, she chastised the miscreants who dared to keep a library book past the due date. That was great entertainment, combined with a lesson in drama and civics. She was a talented lady who devoted her long life to education and volunteer activities.

Wes, I too have vivid memories of Miss Anthony's "shows"! One time in an assembly in the gym, she read personal notes that were left inside lib. books. A scream! Miss Anthony certainly could liven things up, and in so doing, could make sure the library was a quiet place. Once, in a NOT so quiet moment during study hall, I heard her muttering near me how "a book which says it's 'cold as a witch's tit' shouldn't be in a school library!" Well, I had just read CATCHER IN THE RYE and knew that her stage whisper meant that she knew who'd checked it out! All of my memories of Miss Anthony are good--and very colorful--ones.

To be sure, I have never been in such awe of a STARE in my life as the one Miss Anthony could put across a room. She was looking for R-E-S-P-E-C-T long before Aretha Franklin, and she got it. The energy level she had just walking down the hall was more than most of us could ever hope to achieve in a life time. My greatst memory, which I still have on my shelf, was a set of 1911 Encyclopedia Britanica that were donated to, but were too worn for the library. She knew of my interest in the TITANIC, and under "ships", at the bottom of the listing of liners was the last entry: "OLYMPIC and TITANIC now under construction at Harland and Wolff Shipyards". Miss Anthony was that one -of-a-kind sort of individual that someone, in fitting tribute, could write a BOOK about...
