I want to thank each of you for giving my son a taste of why I keep coming back
to Martinsville every five years. It was difficult to SHOW John the town because
so much of the town has been swept away by time and ill-planned PROGRESS. I
couldn't show him the Junior High or the Martin Theatre, my old barber shop or
Floyd's and May's. But we got to walk thru the City Park and stand in the creek
where I built many a dam, stop my car in a spot on Fairy Street where I kissed
my first girl, stand with old friends in the playground at Patrick Henry,
walk the halls of the old MHS... AND, we got to walk thru my old home at 806
Jefferson Circle and rest my hands on my father's workbench once again. The
town changes but all of your names and faces keep the memories alive for me...

| Imagine John....if you could walk up the boxwood lined walkway of the beautiful old Smith Mansion, where confederate soldiers were solemnly buried, and now the municipal building sprawls. Or, if you could walk off Church Street into the Roxie Theatre, on the marble floor, with the smell of freshly popped popcorn, and look between the curtains at the massive mirrors. What city had a Liberty Heights, or such a vibrant community???? progress....I think not, but it was a walk that we have all taken with our sons, perhaps to teach them not to take things for granted, less they repeat the mistakes of the past.....archie |
