On Friday, October 10, 2014, Thomas Thweatte Hawthorne III, passed away after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis, at age 68. He was preceded in deathby his mother, Hazel Bagley Hawthorne; father, Thomas Thweatte Hawthorne Jr.; and brother, John Keith Hawthorne, all of Kenbridge, Va.Tom is survived by his wife of 46 years, Pauline Baughan Hawthorne, of Roanoke, Va.; two sons, Charles Thomas Hawthorne (Tracy Bowman) of Roanoke, Va.and John Gardner Hawthorne (Elizabeth Buford) of Durban, South Africa; two grandsons, Charles Porterfield Hawthorne and Alexander Chilson Hawthorne of Roanoke, Va.; a granddaughter, Grayson Gardner Hawthorne of Durban, South Africa; and brother, Hardy Bagley Hawthorne (Nancy Baskerville) of Kenbridge. In addition to a niece and three nephews, Tom is also survived by his loving sister-in-law, Jeane Baughan Stone of Birmingham, Ala.Born on July 1, 1946 in Kenbridge, Tom attended Kenbridge High School and was graduated from National Business College in Roanoke where he was a member of Alpha Kappa Phi fraternity. He will be missed by his fraternity brothers. Tom served our nation in the United States Army in Viet Nam. Upon returning to Roanoke, he started his banking career with First National Exchange Bank, continuing with Dominion Bankshares and retiring on disability from First Union.An avid athlete in his early life, Tom was active in many community endeavors including local races, coaching his boys' ball teams, and dominating the family croquet matches. After his illness was diagnosed, he became a vocal advocate for the Blue Ridge chapter of the MS Society, and "Tom's Gang" was always highly visible at the annual MS Walk.The family will celebrate Tom's life from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, October 17, 2014 at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Avenue, Roanoke.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts be made to the Blue Ridge Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.Tom's family owes a debt of gratitude to his end of life caregivers, Amedisys Hospice and Sandy Jackson. He leaves behind his special friend, Midnight, and will stop by the Rainbow Bridge to gather his former greyhound companions to accompany him to Heaven.

I only met Paula Baughan Hawthorne's husband Tom a few times but he was a nice guy and will be missed by his loving family and many friends. |

passing of Tom. I knew him as Tommy Hawthorn,Jr. Alpha Kappa Phi member. Remembering what a wonderful couple you two were at NBC where I also attended.
