| I heard of Steve's untimely death this past fall. I was shocked, as we all were. As a youngster, I had the pleasure of going to school with Steve, and even playing some pickup ball with him and Mel, and Jody Leach. I fancied myself as a decent player, a mere pretender to those real players. I was fortunate also to attend Roanoke College at the same time as Steve. His basketball credentials are immeasurable, as Mel stated. Steve's a legend at Roanoke, leading his team to the National Championship. As Mel said, he was a true point guard before anyone know what a point guard was. I can still see Steve bringing the ball up court, head up, scanning the others, looking for a lane, to pass, to attack. On defense, he was relentless, to say the least. As was said, you would not want to have Steve guarding you. Even though I did not see much of Steve, I shall miss his smile, his energy and his love of life, family and of couurse, basketball. |
