Levi Stubbs, lead singer of The Four Tops, passed away today. I tended to prefer Stax/Volt and Atlantic acts over Motown, but The Four Tops were a notable exception. The argument could be made that Reach Out was the biggest song of our four years at Mavahi. I was watching some video clips tonight, and was thinking about the folks that pass for super stars today. Maybe I am an old fogie, but they could not hold a candle to the talent and class of these guys. We came of age in some pretty turbulent times, but we were also blessed to have been there for a period of magical musical creativity. My musical tastes, much like my mid-section, expanded over the years, but they were built on a solid foundation laid down by John R. on many a late night cruise between Rumleys/Ayers/Sportlanes. Levi Stubbs was a base level block in that foundation. |

Amen brother! I'm certain my singing of "Baby I Need Your Lovin" while showering has kept my marriage alive and well.

Levi gone? Say it ain't so. Saw the Four Tops and Temptations together in concert.....what a nostalgic blast.

The Four Tops were the best! I still get 'giggly' when I hear them today. My all time favorite..."I Can't Help Myself".
Here's yours, though, Quailster.
