Re: R.I.P. |
People of our "era" can hardly think of Martinsville without remembering Clarence. I saw him just a few months ago on Church St. He was easily recognizable. Rest in Peace Clarence! |

Re: R.I.P. |
One of the minister's of my home church got Clarence to attend Sunday morning services one summer. He always came in after the service started and never came past the back pew. He always left before the service was completely over. He didn't want to be seen, heard, or spoken to. You could tell that he tried to "fix up" for church. The minister told my family that he was a very intelligent man. He had seen where he lived and said he had salvaged a set of old encyclopedias from a dumpster and had them stacked by his bed. He read those encyclopedias and knew way more than he looked to know. He said that the words that came out of his mouth were so different from what you would expect. This information caused me to look at Clarence differently, although I never had opportunity to converse with him in any way. You are so right calling him a Martinsville icon, Mike. He was a different kind of individual and I hope his soul is at ease too. |

Re: R.I.P. |
I'm from the class of 1975 but just wanted to pass on a little knowledge that I had on Clarence Mason ..Back in 1979 I worked for the Martinsville Bulletin and had the chance to get to know Clarence Mason...He was a very kind hearted man and knew everything that happened in or near downtown Martinsville. There was very little that went on in down town Martinsville that Clarence didn't know about...He knew store owner's,,Policemen,,lawyers,Judges,,,businessmen and residents and took the greatest pride in getting the Bulletin to all his regulars everyday come rain or shine..He was well read he not only delivered the Martinsville Bulletin but also The Roanoke paper The Richmond paper,,The Greensboro paper,,The Danville paper,,,and even the Washington Post sometimes,,,He stomped out a paper route on foot for over 50 years ...I live in St. Augustine Beach Florida now but not to long ago on a visit back to Martinsville as I was driving through downtown there was Clarence in front of the old Globemans Department store had a big old warn out looking shoulder held paper carriers bag on his shoulder and a cigerette hanging out of the corner of his mouth ..He was hauling that newspaper..If anyone deserves to rest in peace it's Clarence Mason ... |
