From Bob Bushnell (2/21/10)-
I just got off the phone with Ann Bowe Wells, Tom's mother. She had a long and enjoyable phone conversation with him Saturday morning. ("It was the first time since I can't remember when that we didn't argue about politics. Bob, Tom held me personally responsible for the election of Barack Obama. I always told him that was the nicest thing anyone ever told me.")
A couple of hours later, she got the call that he was dead. Massive heart attack.
He'll be cremated with a private burial Thursday. Memorial service will be Wednesday night at Norris Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00. Anna Bowe said that they would be serving soft drinks and that hiding beer outside in the culvert for old time's sake would be acceptable. ("Y'all thought I didn't know about it, but I did.")
Tom was deeply involved in the archeological work of the Virginia Museum of Natural History where he was a volunteer under the supervision of Dr. Elizabeth Moore. I know Dr. Moore through church. Like everyone who knew him, she naturally and accurately considered Tom one of a kind. But once the chuckling and headshaking over his antics ended, she spoke with sincere appreciation for the dedication and ability that he brought to the Museum. The last time I saw him, Tom and I talked about his work with Dr. Moore and I was impressed with the serious manner in which he described what he was doing.
Needless to say, I wasn't surprised when his mom said Tom would unequivocably want any contributions made in his memory to go the the museum.
Although part of me thinks it would be good to take up a collection and make a substantial contribution as his classmates, I think it would be better for each of us to make a separate contribution. The total will be the same and I think it would be more meaningful to have a lot of individual contibutions than one generic one. Regardless of how we do it, if the contribution(s) is/are mailed rather than done online, it would be nice to address it/them to the attention of Dr. Elizabeth Moore.

Re: Tom Fleenor |
Just now reading this about contributions to VA Museum of Natural History. Great idea. |
