How many remember the Martinsville Recreation Center in the 60s? The facilities were really nice. The swimming pool and weight room were downstairs. Upstairs they had a recreation room with pool tables where you could look down on the pool. I think the pool even had a high diving board. There was a gym with basketball goals where they used to have dances on Friday and Saturday night. On Friday the local radio station, WMVA, would spin records to dance by. On Saturday they would have a band. You would have to wear a tie and it costs 35 cents to get in. On both nights you could drink all the free Coke you wanted. Zobile Morris managed the place. He owned the first Corvette I had ever seen. Sergeant Gilley kept the peace and made sure things did not get too far out of hand. My favorite dance record was “Twist & Shout by the Beatles. I remember also, that some of the band members were from Martinsville High School. Those were some good times. I still have some of the moves but my granddaughter thinks I look silly. |

Are you talking about the facility just up the street from the high school? I remember that place had a pool but not sure of its name. |

Re: Martinsville Recreation Center 1964 |
We use to have to take swimming classes there during phys ed. Would get in our suits and walk next door to the pool. Even in the snow. Sometimes, very cold, especially coming back when we were wet.
Spent many an afternoon playing pool there and going to the dances. Some fond and some not so fond memories there.
Thanks for the reminder. |
