While reading an article on Viriginapreps this morning I came across the following notice: Sad day at SHS at the death of SHS teacher and avid Roanoke Valley golf supporter George May! Would this be George May from the 63 class? |

Re: Salem HS Teacher Passing (George May) |
I am so sad about this. George May was a wonderful man. I think about how "on track" my life is now, and think back to when I was in high school. I was the long haired kid with the Rolling Stones t-shirt that I'm sure most MHS teachers figured would wind up one day either in jail or driving a fruit truck for a living. George May, though, always encouraged me, always listened to what I had to say, and treated me like I was important.
I never had him for a Math teacher (and if I HAD, I'm sure I would not make as many jokes about Math teachers being monsters!), but he was in charge of of our Senior Class play, "The Man Who Came to Dinner," along with Ms. Eubanks, and he was an absolute joy to work with. George was the kind of teacher who would come out to see my rock bands play, and recently e-mailed me about some musical activities I'm involved with now.
A kind, gentle man who always cared about his students, and I'm crying as I write this. RIP, George. |
