Prayers for Regenia and the family on the passing of one of my favorite teachers, Mr. J.R. Starr.

Joe R. Starr
Died Wednesday, October 7, 2009

The funeral for Joe Roddy Starr, 76, of 1109 B St., Martinsville, who died Oct. 7, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at noon Monday at Grace Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Jimmie Hawkins will preside, and burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the funeral and other times at the home.
Starr was born Jan. 17, 1933, in York, S.C., to Roddy Starr and Anna Graham Starr. They preceded him in death.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and retired from the Martinsville School System, where he taught for 36 years. He was a member of the Virginia and National education associations; the Martinsville Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; NAACP; 32nd Degree Prince Hall Masons and Shriners; Sons of Solomon Lodge 111; King Solomon Consistory 64; KuWat Shriners Temple; and American Legion Homer Dillard Post 78.
He also was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church where he was in the Men’s Chorus, Senior Choir and Men’s Council, and he was a trustee.
Surviving are his wife, Argatha F. Starr of the home; two daughters, Regenia S. Noel of Martinsville and Rhonda Starr of Richmond; two sisters, Hazel Brown of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Dorothy Johnson of Roseboro, N.C.; a brother, Albert Starr of Durham, N.C.; and one granddaughter.

My prayers continue to go out to the family. Mr. Starr was a "real teacher" who gave wisdom, advice, discipline and an education to many students. He pushed his students to think and be responsible for their actions. May God hold the Starr Family close during this time of sorrow.
