Well, thanks to Kathy Mitchell Rice and loyal committee members, Sue Stultz Love, Yvonne Martin Turner, Jo Ann Zimmerman Frost, Melvin Smith, Merle Brigman Duffy, Jan Pratt and no doubt others that I probably have overlooked, the 2008 Old Dawgs Reunion on Saturday, October 11th was another great success.
Let's see how many I can remember this time. The oldest one there was Tarleton Andes from class of 1934. Yes, I do mean 1934. I believe someone said that he is 93 years young and still sharp as a tack in both looks and mind. John Redd Smith from class of 1943 was also there and looking mighty pert, too.
From my own class of 1956, there were Glenn Rhodes and wife, also Freddie Donavant, Jimmy Brigman and wife Esther, Virginia "Puddin" Flannagan Wallace,
Barbara Smith, Carol Shropshire Pratt....and if I am missing someone, I do apologize. The "old gray mare, she just ain't what she used to be." I enjoyed sitting with our "adopted" class member Bill Wade (1955) and his wife, Barbara, who were here from Tennessee.
I notice on the 1964 message board that Ken Wilson wrote that ten members from that class had been present. The only names that I was familiar with were Ken's and Judy Crews, so If anyone reading this is interested in learning more, maybe you can check with Ken.
I recall seeing Roscoe Reynolds, Roger Love, Jerry Nance, Irvin Painter, A.J. Dillon, Betty and Mike Fulcher, Wanda Smith, Barbara Cotty Kirk, Jean Flora Hinchee, Nina Long Hall, Gloria Hawkins Weaver, Merlow Donavant Luttrell, Yolanda Donnely, Mary Ruth Grant Smith, Norman Meeks, Philip Merriman and
wife, Jean Sparks Martin, Billy Sparks, Phil Sparks, David Sparks, Anna Sparks, and again this year, Titus Sparks catered the meal.
As many of you know, I lost my Brewster back in April and because of that I almost didn't attend. Thank all of you who rallied around me and encouraged me to forget such a notion. I am so glad that I didn't give in to myself. It was a wonderful "tonic" and real "picker-upper" to see everyone and get to share more "Mavahi" stories from the good ole '50's. It was especially fun to compare memories of my Jones Creek shenanigans with Bill Wade's South Side stories. We both can always share some lulu's .
My memory just isn't doing justice to the good turn out. Maybe next year if I mention it in time, Merle, Sue or Kathy will have a sign-in page that I can use for
my posting on this board. Of course, if you made the effort to attend, a listing wouldn't be necessary. Think about it and come join us. Just E-mail me if you need a dose of encouragement. I'll be happy to oblige. |

Re: 2008 Old Dawgs Reunion |
Hello, Esther. I didn't make it to the reunion. If I had, I would have been a representative of the class of 1964.
I would loved to have visited with you and your Sparks family members from Jones Creek. My grandmother Hill, my mother, May Poff, Ronald, Patricia, and Bonnie and I went to church at the North Martinsvile PH Church with you. I don't remember all, but I do remember you.
Just wanted to say hello. I would like to know what years your family attended there and possibly your memories of the pastors and other church members.
Blessings to you. Say hello to your Sparks family for me.

Re: 2008 Old Dawgs Reunion |
Hi Esther/Rachel & you other folks: Sorry that I wasn't able to attend this years Ol' Dawgs reunion but I had "family obligations" that weekend. Since I married Carolyn (Deal, MHS '59) I've enjoyed saying that along with her came a busload of family. In May of '05 there were 11 of her immediate family and since then 3 more have been added. (Must be something in the water, as "they" say!) For 2 weekends in a row her three offspring with no fewer than 6 more in-tow showed up in the NC mountains at Carolyn's mom's home, so that's where we ended up during the big ol' MHS event. Sorry that I missed seeing all of you but I have fond memories of everybody at other get-togethers and they will just have to do me 'til next year.
No doubt noone has changed since last I saw them. Probably better looking and spryer, just like me!! |
