Our 60th reunion on Saturday, the 15th, was really great. We had a fun time reminiscing and renewing old friendships. Here is my list of who was there, with a few occasional comments of my own. I'm only adding the towns of those who live away from this area.
If I have missed anyone, please let me know. My e-address is shown.
Iris Barnes and husband Lee from Suffolk, Va., Jim Brigman and Esther from Villa Rica, Ga. (and that is "E-s-t-h-e-r" and not "E-a-s-t-e-r" as Demitria so wittily pointed out to everyone's amusement). Benny Eanes from Charlotte, NC, who always adds to the fun of any event.
Shirley Dodson Spencer and guest. Virginia "Puddin" Flannagan Wallace, Shirley Key Reeves, Fred Donovant, Freddie Compton and wife, Jackie., Reginald Mayhew, Phil Mays and Brenda., Moyer Merriman and Peggy, Betty Priddy Bomar and Jim. Stella Shupe Meadors and daughter, Robin. It was nice to have Donna Witt Engle and Ken stop their globe trotting long enough to join us. Harry Wilford Robertson and wife, Sarah were there and much to the delight of everyone, Sarah treated us to an impersonation of Minnie Pearl. Sarah had ole Minnie down pat, too, with a little help from Harry Wilford.
James Franklin and wife Betty, Jimmy Lusk and Trevis. Sandra Fulcher, Oak Island, NC, Rebecca Mayhew Ridpath from Radford, VA. I had the pleasure of sitting at the same table with these classmates, along with my guest (and sister) Anna Sparks .
Jane Goeghegan Hastings and George from Richmond, VA., Ron Hilbert and Rachel from Greensboro, NC, Patsy Hill Wray and husband, Alan from Culpepper, VA. Beryl Martin Clifton and Bill from Danville, VA., Dianne Lester Smith and Jim Smith from Fisherville, VA., Robert Pedigo, Vinton, VA., Glenn Rhodes and Jeanne from Mooresville, NC., Nancy Rizer Williams and husband from Stoneville, NC, Barbara Short Castellano from Glen Allen, VA., Helen Young Canupp and sister Clara Mae from Bethlehem, GA, Harry Stultz was all the way up from Miami, FL. I had the unexpected pleasure of getting to chat with Harry at Clarence's Restaurant Fri. morning and again at the "Old Dawgs" reunion on Saturday morning. I think that might have been the first time I had seen him since graduation.
Ann Minter Been and Paul from Grand Junction, CO., (Ann is our class reunion chairman and the glue that has kept all our reunions going over these 60 years.) Also, on the committee and attending were Demetria Kouparakis Costas from Springfield, VA., John D. Martin, Jr. from Charlotte, NC, Nancy Strickler Arnold (Rocky Mount, VA), Carol Shropshire Pratt, Lois Stanley Flippin, Jim Lusk, and yours truly, Esther Sparks Powell.
Well, fellow '56ers, this was probably our last one. In five years from now, we will be at least 83 years old (except for John D., whose birthday falls at the end of Oct.) and those of us still alive and kicking probably won't be able to kick high enough to pull off another reunion. Hopefully, some of you will attend the annual "Old Dawgs" that is held each Oct. in the cafeteria of the old school on Cleveland Ave. and we can still get to see each other.

Re: Class of '56 (60th Reunion) |
This reunion just may have been the best one yet except for the Golden Anniversary reunion 10 years ago. I look forward to the 65th and it is my wish that Ann Been and the reunion committee still have the same vim and vigor that they have had for the past 60 years. After all, it is just a number and by then numbers may have been replaced by something more technologically current. (What?!!) Anyway, thanks to all who came from near and far. This was an event to remember, and if we don't, we can create a set of new memories at the 65th reunion! |
