So sorry to learn of the passing of Susan. She and John were always two of the nicest and friendliest fellow classmates and a sweet couple to see in the halls. My deepest sympathy to the Martin family. (Thanks Ann Minter Been for sharing this lovely obituary.)
Susan Field Martin, 87, of Charlotte, NC, passed away on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.
She was born on February 11, 1938 in Winston-Salem, NC, but grew up in Martinsville, VA. Susan graduated from Martinsville High School in 1956 and earned an associate’s degree from Averett College in Danville, VA. She spent most of her career working in secretarial and administrative positions, retiring in 1998 from The Equitable Life Insurance Company.
Susan married her high school sweetheart, John, on April 1, 1961. They had three children and remained married for over 60 years until John’s passing in 2022. Prior to settling in Charlotte in 1978, they lived in various places, including Richmond, VA; Philadelphia, PA; Jackson Hole, WY; Denver, CO; and Atlanta, GA.
Susan was happiest at home, caring for her family; her greatest joy was her role as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. All who knew her were quickly able to see her warm, loving personality, positive outlook on life, and her quick wit. She was known to always have a twinkle in her eye and kept everyone laughing with her sense of humor. When she retired, she could be found spending as much time as possible with her grandchildren. “Susu” was a creative and talented cook and took great pleasure in hosting weekly tea parties for her granddaughters. She also found time to volunteer frequently in her daughter Alice’s first grade classroom at Greenway Park Elementary.
She was an avid reader and could be found making frequent trips to the library. Her other interests included watching old movies and all things PBS, as well as sewing, crocheting, and needlepoint in her younger years. Although she was not known as a world traveler like her husband, one highlight of her life was a trip to Europe to celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary. She also loved the many trips taken to Sunset Beach, NC with the family over the years.
In addition to her husband, John D. Martin, Jr., Susan is predeceased by her parents, Herbert Clinton Field, Jr. and Effie Fulcher Field.
She is survived by her children, John D. Martin, III; Liz Martin Peaseley (Walt); and Alice Martin Jordan (Tim), all of Charlotte; four granddaughters, Lucy Martin of Charlotte; Faith Peaseley Marin (Angel) of Raleigh, NC; Ann Peaseley Graves (Luke) of Greenville, SC; and Isabel Peaseley of Winston-Salem, NC; three great-grandchildren, Amelia and William Marin and Levi Graves; and one brother, Herbert Clinton “Piney” Field, III, of Edenton, NC. She was excited to welcome another great-granddaughter, Baby Girl Graves, due to arrive summer 2025.
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Carmel Hills for their tender care during Susan’s final months.
A visitation for Susan will be held Monday, February 24, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at McEwen Funeral Service Inc., 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to Carmel Hills Resident Assistance Fund,
or VIA Hospice of Charlotte.
