Walter W. Massie
The funeral for Walter William Massie, 73, of 511 Fifth St., Martinsville, who died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Eugene Reynolds will officiate. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Hines Funeral Services from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, and other times at the home.
He was born in Braddock, Pa., on July 9, 1932, to William Lewis Massie and Elizabeth Campbell Massie, both deceased.
He graduated from Virginia State University with a bachelor's degree and received his master's degree from Duquesne University. He furthered his education by attending the University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Radford University and Patrick Henry Community College.
He was a member of Kappa Alphi Phi Fraternity, Alpha Psi Chapter, and was a former member of the Virginia and National Education Associations.
Also, he was a member of the Clean Community Commission, Crisis Hotline and was active in the United Way.
He retired after 41 years as a guidance counselor with the Martinsville School System, including many years at Martinsville High School.
At Grace Presbyterian Church, he served as an elder and as clerk of the session.
Surviving are his wife, Edith R. Massie of the home; a daughter, Terri Lynn Massie of Martinsville; a son, Walter William Massie II of Martinsville; two sisters, Dorothy Parr and Sophie M. Fulton, both off Pittsburgh; and two grandchildren.
