Hey guys: THe MHS band, which has a stellar history, has a lot to offer everyone in updates on what you guys are doing, such as gigs, bands, combos, interesting stories, etc. and the like. Why can't some of you folks get some messages going on this website ?????????
I will add one such story. Back in 1957, I was previleged to be admitted to the MHS Bulldog Band as an 8th grader, playing oboe and cymbals (marching season). At the beginning of the football season, I believe the Dawgs had a 28 game winning streak going on. We had the doubious honor of playing an away game at the now removed Victory Statium in Roanoke, VA playing the William Fleming Colonals. In the last few minutes of the game, the Colonals drove the necessary yards and scored to beat the dawgs. What a crushing defeat....
The band ate at Archie's Town House after the game. I believe it was my first away game as a band member. Well, things got out of hand. Some of the more senior band members trashed Archie's, such as bending up silverware, breaking the tops to the commode resevoirs, sticking toilet rolls down the commodes and just generally making an a.. out of themselves and bringing disgrace upon the band. We were not invited back to Roanoke to play at any more Fleming games as long as I remained at MHS until I graduated in 1962.
Now this is not the most exciting story of the band, but it is one that I wanted to share with this message. When you guys, new or current MHS band members, are out in public and are representing not only MHS but the band itself, then you need to act like mature people with a head on your shoulders. Bringing disgrace upon the band and your school are never rewarded with praise and can just ruin your reputation. Back in the 50's and 60's Bulldog fans didn't know how to lose, as they had such a dominating sports program in football and basketball. They were poor sports fans to be more exact.
I hope you enjoy or did enjoy your time in the MHS band. I know, at age 63, I still have fond memories of playing in that organization and wearing the school colors. When I retired in 1998, I bought an alto sax, taught myself to play and now play alto, tenor and baritone sax in 4 different bands, including two Big Band sound units. I am having the time of my life (retirement). You can do this too. I joined the Roanoke Valley Community Band, which has progressed from grades 2 & 3 music up to playing grades 4, 5 & 6 now. We had Spring Concert last night (June 7, 2007) and had rave reviews.
Don't give up the love of playing and be sure to pass this onto your children. thanks for your time in reading this message.... |

| I have soo many fond memories of marching band. SOOO MANY!! I can't put my finger on just one and say...yeah...thats my favorite..they are all great!! And Kevin...the best band director I ever had...pushed up to do better and better. Looks like some tough love worked Kev!! |
