LIPFORD - James W. Lipford of Jacksonville, FL passed away on his 76th Birthday, March 6, 2001 after a courageous battle against Cancer. Born in Martinsville, Virginia, he was the son of the late B.C. and Hallie Lipford of Martinsville, VA. Jim joined the Navy in 1943 during World War II and served 28 years, retiring as Master Chief Quartermaster in 1975 to Jacksonville, FL. Jim married Gwen Kuhn on July 27, 1944 in Martinsville, Virginia, having 57 wonderful years together. After retiring from the navy attended F.C.C.J. and began working in Engineering in the Water Services Dept. for the City of Jacksonville for 10 years. Survivors include his wife, Gwen, a son, Levin C. Lipford and a daughter, Julie G. Lipford. Also surviving are three sisters, Thelma L. Smith of Martinsville, VA, Shirley L. Slocum and Beverly L. Yeager of Virginia Beach, VA. With Jims family and friends at Mayport Ships Pier, a Navy Chaplain will conduct a parting prayer for him as he sails off to sea on his last cruise.
