Attn: Letters to the Editor
I was saddened to learn of the death of Dr. Mickey Haynes.
Several years ago he was in town and attended an "old dawgs" reunion at the old Mavahi cafeteria. What a great guy!
His obituary mentioned the legendary "last second" score that won the state championship for the Martinsville High School Bulldogs. Whether you witnessed it at the game or learned about the shot second hand, it changed a lot of people's lives. I think it inspired kids all over town to step back from the basket and take longer shots. It also stirred a bigger interest in basketball at the school. I know it instilled an extra boost of optimism in the lives of all of us who shared the joy of that victory Mickey pulled out.
Fate, luck or divine intervention, it was an omen of the life of excellence Dr. Mickey Haynes would enjoy as he continued to make winning shots for the rest of his life. Rest in peace Mickey.... Martinsville will miss you but we'll never forget you.

I still remember Pete Bluhm's broadcast of the 1961 state championship game on WMVA. |
