I was saddened this morning to read that Tarleton Andes has passed away. I knew Tarleton from Dupont and after retirement, from his work with the AARP. The one word that would always jump out at me when I would encounter Tarleton was, "gentleman". He will be missed at the "Old Dawgs" reunions.

The funeral for Tarleton Rives Andes, 95, of 300 Kings Way Road, Martinsville, who died Aug. 20, 2009, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Calvary Christian Church. The Rev. Mike Carrow will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery with a flag presentation by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard, and Masonic rites also will be performed.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel.
A longtime community, civic and church leader, Andes was awarded the “Book of Golden Deeds� in 2001 by the Martinsville Exchange Club, which he had been a member of since 1950. The award recognizes recipients’ cultural and spiritual contributions to the community.
In a Martinsville Bulletin article at that time, Andes cited his work with the Boy Scouts as a scoutmaster and cub master as being one of the most rewarding activities.
He was born Aug. 26, 1913, in Martinsville. He graduated from Martinsville High School, where he was president of the senior class and played on the football team, and then he graduated from Fork Union Military Academy.
Andes joined DuPont in Martinsville as the plant’s photographer. After serving in the Army during World War II as a combat engineer in New Guinea and the Philippines, he returned to his photography position at DuPont and later retired with more than 36 years of service.
He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Martinsville Exchange Club. He had worked with or been a member of Hospice at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, the Natural History Society, 4-H Club, Piedmont Arts Association and AARP.
He was a charter member of Calvary Christian Church, where he had served as the men’s Sunday school teacher and as an elder.
He was the son of the late George M. Andes and Mattie Brown Andes. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Kathryn West Andes; his second wife, Alta Haley Andes; a daughter, Elizabeth Rives Andes; three sisters, Martha Morgan, Lucile A. Weaver and Hannah Andes; and four brothers, Billy, Milton, John Spotswood and Frederick Andes; and two stepsons.
Surviving are one son, Walter Rives Andes of Richmond; a daughter, Mary Tarleton Coleman of Virginia Beach; one sister, Mary Spotswood Davis of Hickory, N.C.; four stepsons; two stepdaughters; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
