I read with interest Ken Wilson's post about the 1961 Homecoming Program. I rememeber that night well. Monahon and Westfall worked their magic in the rain but a spread-offense T.D. by Cave Spring broke our hearts. The older Alverez quarter-backed a tie, when the Bulldogs should have won by two touchdowns.
Coaches Heldreth and Painter always managed to field a competitive team no matter the player-loss from the year before. |

Hey, Bobby..
That was some rivalry between the Bulldogs and Cave Spring..as best I can remember, football, basketball and baseball..they were always hard fought games.. |

Re: Homecoming Football Program |
Jim,
Cave Springs could compete against Martinsville in football but in 60-61 and 61-62 with the likes of Mickey Haynes, Joe Gillespie, Jim Young, John Hodges, David Monahon, Jack Martin and others they were not much competition. Add Cartwright and Husky as coaches, not many teams could play with the Dogs. I know you do not remember but in 61-62, Jim Young led a come-back in the last 35 seconds, to make up 7 points. Cave Springs were sure they had won. |

Re: Homecoming Football Program |
Jim,
I was just a warm body with not much talent. However, I did enjoy trying to play. I tried to stay out of the good players way so I would get some playing time. Hope things are well for you and yours. |
