Merry Christmas, everyone... - 14
12/20/12     Debby Davis Gagliano  (1967)      DebbyGagliano@hotmail.com
The tree is up, lights & wreaths illuminate the yard and doorways and we're expecting snow tomorrow BUT it's not the same feeling I remember from all the Martinsville Christmas celebrations we all experienced...I'm unable to recapture those moments even if I observe the same traditions...I finally realized that the memories were special because of the people involved...most of them are gone now (my parents and grandparents) and the others are scattered through different cities and states...I will see my children after Christmas because they have formed new families and I celebrate a traditional Italian Christmas Eve (Feast of the Five Fishes) with my new family...I won't be riding my sled down Jefferson Circle hill and there won't be a bonfire at the top of Church St. on the other side of Patrick Henry Elem. School for sledding...I'll miss the Christmas Eve service at Broad St. and the Christmas Parade the Sat. after Thanksgiving (does it still happen?) and I won't be walking in town at night with Daddy to see the beautiful windows at Globman's or going down Mulberry Road to look at the stunning decorations on either side...we won't be sitting in the auditorium listening to Miss Anthony's list of "those who have neglected to return their library books before the end of the year"...I'm grateful for all these memories because it seems that the only people who have similiar ones around here, are my age....so many of these traditions have vanished from newer generations...the memories don't make me sad because the lucky ones are the ones who grew up in Martinsville and share them with me...I hope everyone is safe and happy this Christmas...my daughter is due to deliver twins any day now (boy and a girl!!) so I have new memories to make!!...please remember the sweet ones in Conn. who were taken too soon and the brave teachers who died to protect them...we never had that fear and for that I am very grateful...bless you all...Debby Davis Gagliano
