| Sam lost a long, hard-fought battle with prostate cancer last night. He put up a helluva fight, and the last two months were difficult. He maintained his sense of humor throughout the ordeal, and handled the situation with phenonenal grace. |

Sam was a great teammate on our '67 Piedmont District Championship basketball team. In more recent years, I dealt with Sam at the bank in Emporia regarding technology business. In my entire career, I never worked with a more consummate professional . . . or a greater person than Sam.

| I have been remembering our 40th reunion in Fieldale at the Lodge. He was so happy and had a great time. I remember talking at the swing and believe we could have stayed for days...It is a special gift this Class of '68....My thoughts and prayers for Sam's family this weekend and the coming days... Sam was a truly wonderful person... |
