Mimi Hart Riggan, 69, of Martinsville, a longtime educator and former Martinsville Police Department citizen of the year, died Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at Stanleytown Health Care Center.

She was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Nov. 2, 1939, to Charles M. and Minnie Brown Hart. Her parents preceded her in death.

She lived in Martinsville most of her life and attended Martinsville schools, where she graduated in 1958. She graduated from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1962 and taught in public schools in Henry County, Danville, Henrico County and Martinsville.

In 1968, she joined the staff of Carlisle School, where she taught second and fifth grades. She served as the school registrar from 1971 until 1993.

She was instrumental in establishing the Friend’s Field for girls field hockey, was the first cheerleader coach and was head of alumni affairs until 1991.

Along with her sister, Lucy Hart Davis, and her stepmother, Margaretta G. “Margo� Hart, she established the Hart gym at Carlisle in 1984. She also was a member of the Carlisle Founder’s Society and the SPCA, and she was a sustaining member of the Charity League of Martinsville and Henry County. After many years of volunteer service with the Martinsville Police Department, she was honored with its citizen of the year award in 1991.

She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Surviving are her sister and stepmother, both of Martinsville.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Ellen Hanckel officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Martinsville Chapel.
