Northside- Byrds? - 54
08/15/04     Melvin D. Smith  (1963)      melvinsmit@msn.com
I am sitting here thinking of days past and of the Northside students. We made up a large part of the Martinsville High School students. Where are they now? Bennie Byrd just passed away. Many people from other sections of Martinsville may never have heard of Bennie. I remember him as a man who raised all his children and made sure they went to school. He lived in the same house for over 60 years and would help anyone that needed help. He installed a work ethic in his children and many of you are living in houses they helped build and most of us have eaten steaks that his sons cut for us. May he rest in peace in God's hands.

Re: Northside- Byrds?
Melvin,

You are RIGHT ON concerning Mr. Bennie Byrd and his family. They were an outstanding group of neighbors to all of the Sparks clan.

I recall that my mother and daddy had the very highest respect for Mr. and Mrs. Byrd. "Pete" Byrd was a special friend of mine.

Melvin, thank you for the observations you make from time to time on the message boards of Mavahi.Com.

I hope you rec'd the tape by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale okay.

Sincere regards,

David Sparks Class of '62

Re: Northside- Byrds?
Well said, Dr. Sparks. You mentioned "Pete"
and I remember him well .... also O. B. who
was a little older. However, I never knew
"Pete" by any other name and apparently "Pete"
was a nickname because I did not see anyone
named "Pete" listed among the kids. But, I
will never forget Bennie Byrd - he was a very
kind and caring man.

Re: Northside- Byrds?
David, Thank you for your kind words. I appoligize for not getting back to you on the Dr. Peale tape. I have excuses, but not worth a mention. I'll only say that I didn't take the few seconds to answer. Thank you very much for the tape. Take care my friend and I'll see you in October at the reunion.
