"Mickey" Haynes - 8
09/27/03     Ralph Pruitt  (1956)
A friend of mine emailed me that he had
seen "Mickey" Haynes - the great MaVaHi
basketball player - at a local restaurant
on Main St of downtown Martinsville. I
never knew Haynes personally - but - well
recall his timely shooting in the final
seconds of a game against Buena Vista that
handed MaVaHi a state championship. In
viewing the senior photos I found 3 male
seniors under "Haynes" - none of which used
the name "Mickey". I now "gather" that the
name "Mickey" was a nickname. Can anyone in
the class tell me which one of the 3 male
seniors with the last name Haynes was the
basketball great known as "Mickey"?

Re: Mickey Haynes
Mickey was William Michael Haynes--In 1982 when I was an asst. wrestling coach at James River HS -we had a match with Parry McCluer HS at the old high school--in the gym on the wall was a framed copy of the newspaper article on the game with a picture of "the Shot"--it sure brought back a lot of memories--I have been teaching math for 36 years- currently at Salem HS in Salem ,Va.--you may have known my brother Charles May who played football at MHS-class of 56. May see you at the all class reunion in October. Take care-remember the Dogs-George May

Re: "Mickey" Haynes
Mr. May - I thank you for the info you gave
me. I told my friend in Martinsville (Irvin
Painter - Class of '58) that I felt "Mickey"
was most likely William Michael Haynes be-
cause he simply looks like a basketball man.
Your info confirmed those feelings. As for
your brother, Charles. I do recognize his
features from his senior photo - but - never
got to know him very well in school. Most
of my time at MaVaHi was with the Class of
1957 although I should have finished with
the Class of 1956. Anyway, George, thank
you kindly for the info about "Mickey"
Haynes - it was appreciated. I plan to tra-
vel to Martinsville in 2 weeks to attend the
next 'Old Dawgs reunion. Hope to see you
there. Incidently - I now reside in PA.
