Class of "65 Reunion Saturday - 12
09/30/25     Esther Sparks Powell  (1956)      bhpowell36@yahoo.com

Thanks to classmate Philip Sparks, the class of '65 celebrated it's 60th-year reunion at the Elk's Lodge in Martinsville on Saturday night. Philip did an amazing job of getting it together and chasing down so many classmates. He went all out on everything. The food was catered by Debbie's out of Stoneville, NC. If anyone left hungry, it is on them, because there was one heck of a buffet selection and plenty of it. Everyone that we heard from was very complimentary of the food and the catering service.

Philip seemed to have thought of every thing. The school colors of maroon and gray could be seen all around. There was a continuous wonderful festive atmosphere everywhere.

I was touched by the fact when Phil heard that there was maybe a classmate, or two, with disabilities that would prevent them from deciding to attend, he ordered a handicap Port-o John and had it placed conveniently on hand near a ramp to eliminate one of their main worries about not being able to show up.

It was a wonderful turnout. Phil volunteered me (class of '56) and our younger sister, Anna (class of '59), to meet, greet and register guests as they arrived. With the help of Judi Boyd (class of '67 and guest of Jimmy Tuggle), I think we managed to get at least 90% of those who attended signed in on the register sheet.

We were so honored to do it for him, plus we had the best seats in the lodge. Philip had set up our desk in the reception area near the front door. We got to see nearly everyone coming in and leaving. We listened in on all the "ooohing" and "aaahhhing," and getting reacquainted by folks who hadn't seen each other in years, many since graduation 60 years ago.

I hope you will enjoy seeing the attendees names and where they live now. If you know any names missing, just e-mail me and I'll be glad to add them to the list. I know there are going to be some because it became a real madhouse when everyone was coming in at the same time. Several had come in at a back door, too, and were completely missed by us. ( E-mail address is bhpowell36@yahoo.com )

Janie Carter Vaughan and David from Lynchburg, VA. Janie was very helpful throughout the night to Anna, Judi and me when we needed additional info on names or something. Thank you, Janie.

Re: Class of 65
Esther, enjoyed reading your post. I remember the Sparks family from the little N. Martinsville P.H. Church back in the 50's. I enjoyed reading the names of the attendees. Thanks so much. And... of course, David.

Re: Class of
Phil, Esther, and Anna, the Sparks family pulled off the reunion flawlessly with good food, drinks, timing, hospitality, and a great turnout. I am sure that Kathy was there in spirit! My wife Kay and I were there, we came in 'with the crowd', and I took our info form to the table, and filled out, and put back in the box on the 'greet' table. Thank you guys for a wonderful night. You know at 60, maybe 5 years is a little long to wait for another....thank you Phil, let us all contribute in the future....archie
