| Six years later, and I learned from MISS Marshall (shame on you Townesy, for modernizing that lady into a Ms.!). I learned to yawn with my mouth closed...being short AND nearsighted, of course I was on the front row. And discovered pretty quickly that to yawn in her class was a sign of boredom, and you WERE NOT bored in her class!! But I do think her teaching, and lack of tolerance for anything but my VERY BEST made me what I am. I know that when I see people today, especially those younger than me, I think to myself, "I am part of the last generation to get an EXCELLENT education in a public high school." |

| While I did not have Miss Marshall as a teacher, I did have a few teachers like her, and am grateful I did. Like you, I find myself thinking, and, at times, saying a loud, "I am part of the last generation to receive an EXCELLENT education in a public school system, and I was an undiagnosed dyslexic!" The English language is no longer taught if you listen to many of today’s students. While my spoken English is not perfect, I do at least enunciate the words even if I do happen to have a little southern drawl. The word for is pronounced four not fir. However, I still have trouble pronouncing the word was (wäz - stressed). I know wuz (unstressed) is not the correct pronunciation. Goodness knows, Miss Martha Anthony certainly corrected me enough times. |

You are so right--while I may not always speak correctly I DO know what IS correct! I've edited books for others, and I know that ability comes mostly from my public school education, not my college (after-the-fact) education! And as a teacher, I know all too well what we are given to work with (I've said more than once, "You can't teach a rock!")
I remember Miss Martha Anthony too! And Mrs. Morris & Mrs. DeShazo. And of course, Mrs. Scheck got me off to the best start for my first two years at Patrick Henry! Sometimes when I think back about my teachers, I realize I'm making a "Top Ten" list of those who SHOULD have been "teacher of the year"--EVERY year!
